What to Wear in Hong Kong in Summer|Dressing for Heat, Air Conditioning & a Lot of Walking
Azuki / 2023.07
Step outside in Hong Kong in July and you'll be sweating within five minutes. Step into the MTR, a mall, or a cha chaan teng and the air conditioning will chill that same sweat-soaked shirt in seconds. The real challenge of dressing for Hong Kong in summer isn't the heat. It's the constant switching between two completely different climates in the same day. We spent five days and four nights here, walking over twenty thousand steps most days. This is what we actually learned about packing for it.

Tops and Bottoms
The humidity hit us the moment we walked out of the airport on day one. Sweat has nowhere to go here, and clothes stick to your back faster than you'd expect. In this kind of environment, fabric matters more than style.
Recommended: moisture-wicking, quick-dry, breathable materials. Avoid pure cotton, which holds moisture and stays damp.
Tops: lightweight t-shirts, technical fabric, or UV-protective materials all work well
Bottoms: wide-leg trousers, breathable skirts, or moisture-wicking shorts. Anything that reduces heat and friction over a long day of walking.

Light Outer Layer
The bigger concern, counterintuitively, is indoors. Every time you walk into the MTR, a department store, or a cha chaan teng, it feels like crossing from summer into winter. The air conditioning is set and non-negotiable. A wet shirt in that environment cools down fast, sometimes uncomfortably so.
Recommended: a thin shirt, a lightweight UV jacket, or a packable windbreaker
Purpose: put it on the moment you step inside, before the chill sets in
Layering isn't optional in Hong Kong in July. It's the whole system.

Footwear
Hong Kong grows upward, and walking here means dealing with what that involves:
Long staircases (Ngong Ping, Tian Tan Buddha)
Extended transfer corridors inside MTR stations
Steep, uneven slopes (Central, The Peak)
Most days will start at ten thousand steps and keep going.
Recommended: well-cushioned trainers with good ankle support, already broken in
Avoid: new shoes, hard-soled shoes, sandals with any risk of slipping
In Hong Kong, the right pair of shoes matters more than anything else you pack.
What to Keep in Your Bag

Three things we reached for most over five days:・Wet wipes: essential for roast meats, clay pot rice, and anything eaten standing up. ・Muscle pain patches: twenty thousand steps a day will find whatever weakness your legs have. ・A large water bottle: more important than the frozen lemon tea, though both have their place. Simple enough. But each one earned its spot in the bag by the end of day one.
