Hong Kong 5-Day Travel Guide|Weather, Transport, Food & Itinerary Overview

Hong Kong in July has a particular weight to it. The air is thick and wet, less like summer and more like a wrung-out towel draped over your shoulders the moment you step outside. Jack and I walked into a city that grows vertically, stacks its life on top of itself, and rarely pauses for anyone.
We skipped the beach resorts. Instead: Chungking Mansions and the particular atmosphere of a building that contains more of the world than most cities do. The roar of Sha Tin Racecourse on a race day. The sound of ceramic landing on a table in a cha chaan teng, which is how efficiency sounds here. We got lost in the layered streets of Central and found a slower pace on a tram in Causeway Bay. Hong Kong is crowded and fast and genuinely close to the ground in a way that polished cities rarely are. The glamorous and the nostalgic, the high-rise and the old street, urgency and warmth, all of it exists at once.
If you're heading to Hong Kong in the height of summer, this five-day record is meant to show you more than the skyline. It's about what's in the streets, the crowds, and the unremarkable moments that turn out to matter most.

Climate
Average temperatures in July run between 29°C and 33°C, but with humidity consistently above 80% and heat radiating off the buildings and air conditioning units, the felt temperature regularly exceeds 38°C. Outdoors is a sauna. Indoors, the MTR, cha chaan tengs, and shopping malls are kept at 18°C to 20°C, a gap of up to 15 degrees. Carry a light layer for indoor use. This sounds unnecessary until the first time you're genuinely cold inside a convenience store.

Accommodation: ★★★★☆
Hotel rooms in Hong Kong tend to be smaller than you'd expect for the price. Popular areas including Tsim Sha Tsui, Central, and Yau Ma Tei cover most budgets. For the experience that comes with its own set of stories, Chungking Mansions is an option worth considering, with appropriate mental preparation.

Getting Around: ★★★★★
The MTR, Airport Express, ding ding tram, Star Ferry, and red minibuses together cover almost everywhere you'll want to go. Get an Octopus card immediately and use it for everything. For the airport journey, the two-person Airport Express ticket works out cheaper than tapping in separately.

Food and Costs: ★★★★☆
Cha chaan tengs run on efficiency. Shared tables are standard, and cold drinks are typically priced higher than hot ones. Roast meat shops, cha chaan tengs, and dim sum restaurants will keep you well fed at around HKD$50 to HKD$100 per meal.

City Character
Hong Kong holds its contradictions close. Luxury boutiques in Central, then a traditional market two streets over. Glass tower blocks standing directly beside tong lau, the old pre-war and post-war tenement buildings that define the older streetscapes of the city. The ding ding tram moving slowly through traffic that doesn't. Efficiency and warmth, glamour and nostalgia, all occupying the same streets at the same time.

Reflection
Azuki
Hong Kong is loud, fast, and relentless. Every day reminds you to keep up. And precisely because of that, a cold glass of frozen lemon tea, a slow tram ride, a box of roast meats eaten on a park bench, each of these things lands differently here than it would anywhere else.Over five days we saw the chaos of Chungking Mansions, the efficiency of a cha chaan teng, the particular heat of a Sha Tin race day, and the harbour at night. These things don't obviously belong together. But they add up to something that feels true about this city. When the plane left, what I took with me wasn't the skyline. It was the lesson, quiet and specific, about how much is already enough.
