Took the train from Sapporo to Otaru with a station bento in hand. Cold rice, moving scenery, chopsticks. Somehow the most Japanese moment of the whole trip. First stop was Sankaku Market for a three-color seafood bowl: sea urchin, crab, and salmon roe. Fresh, simple, and very Otaru. Then the canal, the dessert shops, and a train back to Sapporo for one last shopping run.

Walked into Sankaku Market and got immediately stopped in our tracks by a wall of king crab. Jack wanted one, badly. But whole crab only, and the price tag said otherwise. We kept walking until a friendly grandmother waved us over with samples of sea urchin and salmon roe, and that was enough to pull us in.
・I went with the three-color bowl: sea urchin, scallop, and snow crab. Generous portion, but only served with plain steamed rice, which took some getting used to.
・Jack splurged on the sea urchin and snow crab bowl at ¥2,300. Not bad, but not the revelation we were hoping for. More of a "we were here and we ate it" kind of meal.

Stepped into the city and immediately felt the Japanese-meets-European atmosphere settle in. Glass studios and dessert shops everywhere, the kind of street that makes it impossible to walk in a straight line.

Jack worked through a banana chocolate and the Kitaichi eight-layer soft serve. I went straight for the LeTAO strawberry parfait, tangy and light, not too sweet. The LeTAO soufflé was something else entirely. The kind of thing that even non-dessert people end up finishing and quietly wanting another.
Stopped by the visitor center mid-afternoon and found out the wind that day was too strong for the observation decks. Jack's last Hokkaido night view: cancelled. We climbed up to Suitengu Shrine instead and got the whole city from above, canal, rooftops, and harbor all laid out below us.

Back in Sapporo by evening. Uniqlo, Bic Camera, then the real mission: Daikoku Drugstore, where ¥5,000 worth of skincare and random finds somehow disappeared from the shelf and into our basket. Ended the night at the supermarket at exactly 8pm, which in Japan means one thing. Everyone lined up, eyes on the discount stickers, and the moment the staff started marking things down the shelves emptied in minutes. Cheap dinner, full experience.

Azuki

Today had three distinct flavors: seafood in the market, sweets along the canal, and the chaos of Sapporo shopping. The seafood bowl didn't quite live up to the hype, but the desserts and the late-night supermarket run more than made up for it.
