In April, Biei can't quite decide what it wants to be. The snow hasn't finished leaving, and the flowers haven't fully arrived. Walking through it, you realize the in-between is the whole point.
Aoike and Shirahige Falls are the two places that hold this transition best: one still, one moving, both quietly extraordinary.

The photos of Aoike always promise a vivid, dreamlike blue. The reality in April is more complicated and more interesting.On overcast days, the color pulls back into a deep, quiet ink. When the sun comes through, the turquoise surface appears almost lit from below. And in early April, parts of the pond can still be half-frozen, which adds something a finished landscape never could: the feeling of catching a place mid-thought.
小提醒：如果你期待明信片般的藍，建議夏天或秋天再訪。但若你喜歡「季節邊界」的氛圍，四月是很特別的時機。
For travelers: if the postcard version is what you're after, summer or autumn will serve you better. But if you're drawn to the edges of seasons, April has something those months don't.

Shirahige isn't really about the waterfall. It's about what surrounds it.
In April the water runs full, pushing out through volcanic rock in white curtains. The temperature is still low enough that snow clings to the edges of the falls, cold against the moving water. Nothing here feels designed for visitors. It feels like somewhere nature is just getting on with things, and you happened to show up.
Standing in front of it, you feel the scale shift. Smaller than you expected to feel, closer to something real than most places let you get.

Most visitors at Aoike stay on the main platform, take their photos, and leave. If you walk a little further down the side path, the season reveals itself more quietly: wet ground from the melting snow, the smell of pine and earth mixing together, the occasional bird cutting across the treeline, small animal tracks pressed into the mud.
Details that only exist in spring. A reminder that Aoike isn't just a color. It's a place that changes with the light, the season, and how long you're willing to stay.

四月的美瑛不會給你一個「完美 postcard」。但它會給你一個真實的季節交界：青池的藍有時沉默，白鬚瀑布的雪仍未散去。這種「未定型的美」，反而讓旅程留下更深刻的記憶。
April in Biei won't hand you a perfect image. What it offers instead is a season caught between two versions of itself: Aoike somewhere between blue and grey, Shirahige still half-wrapped in snow. That unfinished quality is exactly what stays with you after the trip is over.
