Sapporo Day 1 Itinerary
Azuki / 2023.04
There was one more reason this trip happened, a personal one. During the pandemic, watching First Love on Netflix, Mitsuishi and Sato Takeru, Utada Hikaru's music, all that snow, something got stuck in my head. I told myself: first chance to travel again, Hokkaido.
That chance finally came.
The First Spring After the Pandemic
Taoyuan Airport at midnight. Check-in went smoothly until the Tiger Air staff smiled and commented that our surname romanization was "quite unique." Security was a different story. Jack put his bag in the wrong place, froze up, and blocked the entire line. The expressions on the faces behind us said everything that didn't need to be said out loud. Small plane, plenty of turbulence, four hours of sleep with an eye mask. Got off the plane, noticed the trip badge had fallen off somewhere, then found a 50 NT coin on the ground. Dramatic start, as expected. This was our first trip abroad after the pandemic, and we gave it to Hokkaido. Flights around NT$11,000, easy decision. We also got lucky with timing: cherry blossoms just starting in southern Hokkaido, snow still lingering in the east. Two seasons in one trip.
Soup Curry in Sapporo|Okushiba Shoten
Arrived in Sapporo and skipped the sightseeing. Went straight to Okushiba-shoten for soup curry. Rich broth, generous vegetables, well-seasoned chicken, and adjustable spice levels that worked perfectly for someone who considers themselves spice-cautious. Ordering involved broken Japanese and a fair amount of pointing, basically a guessing game. But the first spoonful landed and something clicked: this is what coming back to Japan feels like.

・Sapporo Clock Tower: Smaller in person than in photos, which somehow makes it more likeable. A landmark that works better as a brief stop than a destination. Address: Kita 1 Jo Nishi 2 Chome, Chuo-ku, Sapporo. Suggested time: 20 to 30 minutes.
・Hokkaido Shrine: We made it through the gates with about ten minutes to spare before closing. Address: 474 Miyagaoka, Chuo-ku, Sapporo. Suggested time: 40 to 60 minutes.

Quick note: early April in Sapporo runs around 5 to 10°C during the day and drops close to freezing at night. A windbreaker and scarf are not optional.
Yakiniku Dinner & Don Quijote Night
On the bus back, Jack asked the driver in Mandarin whether they accepted card payment. The driver's face cycled through several expressions in quick succession. At the hostel, check-in required a combination of English, Mandarin, and some light decoding to locate the door code. Felt briefly like an escape room.
Dinner at a yakiniku place where the ordering screen was entirely in Japanese despite the menu listing a Chinese option. We guessed based on photos and got it right. Then to Don Quijote for gloves, where the only remaining option was a rack of undersized children's gloves in colors nobody had chosen. We left without gloves.

Reflection
Azuki
Sapporo wasn't what I expected, which turned out to be the best thing about it. Less flashy than I'd imagined, warmer in atmosphere than I'd anticipated. And every mishap, the security line, the bus driver's face, the gloves, ended up being the part of the day I'll actually remember.
