We started the morning at Hakodate Morning Market, where a cheerful vendor waved us over for scallop samples and somehow talked us into trying fresh Hokkaido melon. From there, a drive to Lake Toya for the spring scenery and that view. Then back to Susukino in Sapporo for a six-course fugu dinner to close out what was, without question, a very good eating day.

The moment we stepped into the morning market, a vendor pulled us in for scallop samples and launched into stories about his trip to Taiwan, all while enthusiastically pitching his "buy big, get big" deal. We were mostly interested in the smaller portions, but his energy was hard not to love. Jack tried the famous Hokkaido melon, which was fine, though honestly Taiwan melon might still have the edge on sweetness. I spent most of the market running around taking photos until a vendor asked if I wanted a photo with his hairy crab. Sure, why not. Wrapped up the morning back at the hotel with a proper Japanese breakfast spread.

Took the train to Lake Toya and felt the mood shift the second we reached the waterfront. Clear water, Mt. Yotei in the distance, the kind of view that looks edited but isn't. Lunch was at a small family-run curry place where the owner greeted us like regulars and sent out portions that were way bigger than expected, and somehow even better than they looked. She stopped by on our way out to ask if everything was good. It was. After lunch, a boat ride on the lake where a group of Korean grandmothers were having the time of their lives feeding seagulls, which was genuinely entertaining. On the way back we stumbled across a shrine with a free foot bath, a small and very welcome surprise.

Back in Sapporo by evening, the busy city streets felt like a completely different world after days in quieter towns. Dropped our bags and jumped on the tram to Susukino, which is known for nightlife but also quietly serious about food. We went all in on the six-course fugu dinner: dressed cold, sashimi, deep fried, hot pot, grilled, and ochazuke to finish, plus drinks and ice cream. Every course was a surprise. Walked out completely satisfied.

Then came the small disaster. We wandered around Susukino a little too long, missed the last tram, and ended up walking back to the hotel for over twenty minutes on legs that had already done too much. Feet nearly gave out. Very on-brand for the last stretch of a big travel day.

Azuki

Day 7 was an eating day from start to finish: scallops at the market, curry by the lake, fugu in the city. The walk home at the end was not part of the plan, but that's travel at its most honest.
