Japan's first Western-style fortification, and in spring surrounded by cherry blossoms, it looks almost too picturesque to be real.Like Otaru, Hakodate has a distinct Japanese-meets-Western feel: churches, old port warehouses, streets that make you feel like you've briefly stepped somewhere else. That's not an accident.

Hakodate's night view is listed among the top three in the world, and standing at the top of Mt. Hakodate you understand why. The city fans out below in a shape unique to this peninsula, port on both sides, lights stretching all the way to the water.It's very weather-dependent though. Cloud cover can wipe out the whole thing in seconds. (Yes, the "dark" moment is a real risk.) But on a clear night, it genuinely earns its reputation.
